Terre des
hommes
(Tdh) is at the moment the only NGO active in
northern Afghanistan, providing support to schools beyond primary
education. Emphasis has moved away from constructing a large
number of school buildings to supporting teachers (training,
salaries) and supplying teaching materials in collaboration with
UNICEF. Recognizing that the likelihood of free state-supported
education in near future is very slim, Terre des hommes (Tdh)
mobilized community support for education.
Terre
des hommes’
(Tdh) education project includes construction of
four village schools (in Khuja-Khirab, Ghange, Dashtak and Sari
Ghar). Stationary, teaching aids, teacher training and providing
salaries for 127 teachers (107 male teachers and 20 female
teachers) of 11 schools (5 rural primary school, one girls
primary, middle and high school and one boys primary, middle and
high school, both in Rustaq), is part of the program. The number
of children going to Tdh’ supported schools (grade 1 to grade 12)
is growing. In 2002 the number of pupils in schools supported by
Terre des hommes (Tdh) has increased by 260 %: the number
of girls going to school increased from 752 to 2.084 and the
number of boys from 1.262 to 3.164. The ratio of girls going to
schools is now given with 39,71 % - a very positive result of
Terre des hommes’ gender-sensitive education policy in Rustaq.
School materials to all pupils are regularly provided – fulfilling
UNICEF standard requirements in education. At least 67% of the
teachers received teacher training, based on modern “basic
competency learning” systems as implemented by UNICEF.
School buildings
will be handed over to the respective communities in order to
promote responsibility and project ownership. The communities will
be assisted to promote the set up of school committees in order to
manage their educational requirements for further sustainability.
A
Terre des hommes (Tdh) school inspector will closely
communicate with the parents & teachers, and local authorities
like mullahs of the 15 villages in order to create more awareness
regarding girls’ education and to monitor further progress.
