Terre des hommes
(Tdh) understands safe water and sanitation as one of the principle underlying determinants of the health situation of children and women in Rustaq. Adequate sanitation and hygiene practices, and improved water and sanitation facilities are vital if childhood diseases and malnutrition are to be reduced:

The population in the target area of 10 villages will have access to safe drinking water at community-managed water reservoirs. All in all 13 water reservoirs will be completed and existing 15 springs rehabilitated in 2002. Up to June 2002 five villages are already provided with water reservoirs and more than 12.000 people have now access to safe water. A major result achieved is limiting the spread of water-born diseases.

Increasing awareness amongst adults and children on latrine types and hygienic practices is one of the prime aims of Terre des hommes (Tdh) water & sanitation projects. It includes issues of solid waste and its appropriate disposal in health education programs for children and adults. All schools within the education project use the construction of latrines as an entry point for health education especially for use of latrines.  Terre des hommes (Tdh) with strong involvement and support of local communities will construct the water reservoirs and provide the necessary pipes. Sanitation will focus on children mainly through existing school programs.

School latrines will be constructed and used as entry point for health education in schools. The approach will be supported by community health workers. School latrines will be built near to all schools of the project. Latrines will be used in teaching sanitation & hygiene as an entry point for health education.

The project has been completed end of 2002, much earlier than expected.
