Through the mother-child-health home-visiting project the support and contact provided by Terre des hommes’ (Tdh) midwives to pregnant women, mothers and their newly born babies will significantly improve the women’s health status and is an essential service – considering the specific cultural requirements of Pashtun women who have little opportunities to leave their homes and with almost no access to maternal health facilities. Terre des hommes (Tdh) established an office with logistical facilities and office rent. In addition  female Afghan health professionals are employed.

Targeted clients in Kandahar will be identified through the maternity hospitals and MCH referral system and community contacts. The focus of home visits will be to assess the women’s and new-borns’ health. Where possible, two visits are made during antenatal period to assess the well being of the pregnant women and to detect or refer early potential complications. In the post-natal period five home visits are made to assess the maternal and baby’s progress. Health education will contribute to the improvement of maternal health in the long run.

With the present difficulties in the access to medical facilities in Kandahar, the support and contact with pregnant women, or mothers and their newly born babies, through a home visiting program is an essential service. The home visiting program of Terre des hommes (Tdh) is aimed at making childbirth safer by improving maternal and infant health, reducing infant mortality focusing on the first 42 days of life, reducing maternal mortality focusing on the mother from the day she begins participating in the program to the 42nd day after the birth, reducing maternal morbidity during the antepartum and postpartum periods and increasing awareness regarding the importance of vaccinations and to refer the women and their babies to MCH clinics for necessary vaccinations.

Co-funded by Swiss Development Cooperation (SDC) and Department for International Development (DFID)
