What exactly is Terre des hommes (Tdh)?

Founded in 1960 by Edmond Kaiser Terre des hommes provides assistance to children in distress, and this with no political, racial or religious bias. The foundation has two vocations: The realization of concrete projects giving direct assistance to needy children and acting as ambassador by promoting children’s rights or denouncing their violation.

Most projects have a long-term vision, and their beneficiaries are given constant support until they are completely autonomous. However, Terre des hommes also intervenes whenever emergency action is necessary.

With a budget of around CHF 30 millions per year Terre des hommes is Switzerland’s largest humanitarian organization giving assistance to children. Almost two-thirds of its funds are provided by the general public

Terre des hommes (Tdh) sent an evaluation team to Kabul in March 1995, in order to start projects, which are still running up to now. Over the years Terre des hommes (Tdh) has expanded its assistance programs with project offices in Kabul (Kabul Province), Rustaq (Taqhar Province), in Kandahar (Kandahar Province) in Afghanistan, and Peshawar in Pakistan. History The Swiss Foundation of Terre des hommes (Tdh) is working in Afghanistan for the last nine years. Terre des hommes (Tdh) negotiated a first protocol with the pre-Taliban government, Ministry of Public Health (MoPH), in 1996, renewed it with the Taliban government on April 1999 enabling this program to employ Afghan female health workers in the community. In addition, a further protocol has been signed in May 2001, again with the Taliban government, to establish a women & girls center, which has then become a focal point in providing special maternal care for mothers and girls in Kabul up to June 2002. In February 2002 Terre des hommes signed again a protocol with the Interim Administration of Afghanistan to continue and to expand its projects and programs countrywide. Emergency Context in Afghanistan Due to the emergency context of working inside Afghanistan, with ongoing military operations, continuous insecurity, the reign of the warlords and massive population movements, Terre des hommes (Tdh) is implementing almost all projects by its own in order to maintain a very high level in humanitarian aid operations. Beside development-oriented projects Terre des hommes (Tdh) implemented several emergency projects in Kabul and rural northern Afghanistan as well. Staffing Terre des hommes’ (Tdh) employment policy is focusing on promoting female employment. Presently Terre des hommes (Tdh) has more than 220 staff members in programs and projects – directly managed by Terre des hommes (Tdh). 37% of all staffs are female Afghans working in projects in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
